Kherson watermelon received the status of geographical indication: new prospects for the region

The Ukrainian National Intellectual Property and Innovation Office (IP Office) has officially registered a new geographical indication - "Kherson Watermelon". Watermelons grown on the sandy soils of the Tavria region, in particular in the territories of the Skadovsky, Kherson and Kakhovsky districts of the Kherson region, received this status.

This was reported by the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, emphasizing that this achievement is an important step for local producers and for the agricultural sector of the country in general.

"Kherson Watermelon" stands out for its special characteristics, which include high sugar content, dense flesh, green skin with pale green stripes, and deep red or pink flesh color. This watermelon is known for its crispness and extraordinary taste, making it a favorite among many consumers.

Deputy Minister of Economy Vitaly Kindrativ noted that the registration of "Kherson Watermelon" as a geographical indication is a significant event for the Ukrainian agricultural sector. This is not only a recognition of the uniqueness of the products, but also a symbol of the resilience of Ukrainian farmers who continue to work and develop their farms, despite the challenges of the war.

In addition to prestige, the status of a geographical indication opens up new opportunities for local producers. This increases their competitiveness both on the domestic and international markets. In addition, communities engaged in the cultivation of Kherson watermelons will receive additional tax revenues, which will contribute to the economic development of the region.

For consumers, this means guaranteed product quality, because the geographical indication is a kind of sign of authenticity and high standards. This status will also contribute to the popularization of Kherson watermelons as a national product, which can strengthen the position of Ukraine in the agricultural markets of the world.

The application for registration of a geographical indication was submitted by the public union "Association of Kherson Watermelon Producers". Its representatives not only work on the development of agriculture, but also protect their native land from the Russian invaders at the front, which adds special importance to this achievement.
