Argentina is preparing to send a shipment of corn to its biggest importer, China, for the first time in 15 years. This step opens up new opportunities for expanding trade relations between the two countries.
According to information from Bloomberg, Syngenta AG from Argentina secured the MSXT Echo tanker to deliver 66,000 metric tons of corn grains to China.
The shipment is the first since the resumption of diplomatic efforts to open the Chinese market for Argentine corn. After nearly a year of negotiations, Argentina successfully obtained permission from Beijing to export its grain.
The decision to supply China indicates the intention of both countries to strengthen trade ties. Last year, Javier Milea, who now heads Argentina, promised to maintain stability in relations with China, despite some political turbulence.
Chinese investment and trade are an important part of Argentina's economy, covering raw materials, energy and the financial sector, according to data provided in the report.
China is known as the largest importer of corn for feeding its animals. While the country has traditionally sourced its grain from the United States, it is increasingly turning to other suppliers such as Brazil and now Argentina.
With extreme weather conditions that include floods and droughts, China's farmers are constantly grappling with the challenges of ensuring the country's food security, making the issue of corn supplies particularly pressing for the country's leaders.
