Ukrainian onions to conquer the UK market

Ukrainian onions continue to actively conquer new export markets. In January 2024, the first deliveries of Ukrainian onions to the UK market began. This is reported by EastFruit analysts, emphasizing the importance of this step for Ukrainian producers.

According to experts, this is a non-standard direction for onion exports from Ukraine, but very promising, especially in the context of onion shortages in the European market. At the same time, Romania remains the main market, where almost 2 thousand tons of products are shipped monthly. Moldova also remains a significant consumer of Ukrainian onions, as well as other countries such as Bulgaria, Austria and Montenegro.

There are plenty of reasons to expand onion exports from Ukraine. Prices for Ukrainian onions are among the lowest in history, at around 31 cents per kilogram. Compared to EU countries or Moldova, Ukrainian onions are much cheaper. Even in Poland, where onion prices are the lowest in the EU thanks to massive imports from Russia, prices are on average 40% higher than in Ukraine.

Wholesale prices for onions in Ukraine are almost twice as low as in the Netherlands, the largest exporter of onions to the EU. This opens up opportunities for further expansion of the geography of Ukrainian onion exports, which is a promising area for the development of Ukraine's agricultural sector.
