Scientists in North Carolina have revolutionized traditional Christmas trees by creating a new species with superior genetics. After testing nearly 30,000 Christmas trees, they selected 25 trees with the best genetic characteristics, transforming them into a graceful variety designed for long-lasting standing and aesthetic appeal.
Scientists used the genetic characteristics of the Fraser spruce, one of the most popular species in the United States, to create a unique tree. Not only is this new version taller and more beautiful, but it is also noted for the fact that it only sheds some of its branches, making it even more practical for long-term use.
The state's Christmas tree genetics program has worked for more than 40 years to help trees become hardy and aesthetically pleasing. Scientists identified 25 specimens with the best genetics, propagated them, and planted them in a special garden at the research station.
More than 1,000 trees in the garden have already shown their first cones, which contain up to 100 seeds. Researchers are collecting these cones for further study and plan to send them to a seed processing plant. This process will make it possible to distribute the new type of Christmas tree to producers in the period from 2026 to 2028.
It should be noted that if producers start planting genetically modified trees by 2030, they will not be available to customers until at least 2037, given the time required to grow and follow the necessary technological processes.
