Polish farmers are ready to join the protest that is already underway among carriers on the border with Ukraine, which could lead to serious complications and threats to humanitarian aid for Ukraine.
According to Bloomberg, approximately 100 farmers from the Betrayed Countryside Association plan to hold a three-week protest at the Medicza border crossing on Thursday, according to one of the organizers, Lukasz Martin.
"Farmers were the first group to be affected. Now there are transportation companies, the question is who will be next," he said.
According to the newspaper, members of the International Road Transport Union's industry group from Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Lithuania have called on European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to revise the agreement liberalizing traffic with Ukraine, which expires in June 2024.
It is worth noting that the EU executive body has stated that any reintroduction of permits or quotas for road transportation from Ukraine is legally impossible, as it would violate the current agreement between the EU and Kyiv.
Serhiy Derkach, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine, visited the Rava-Ruska and Krakivets checkpoints on Monday and reported that there were no more than 15 protesters at the two checkpoints, who are effectively holding the border hostage.
