Rising prices for greenhouse cucumbers in Ukraine: what is known

18 авг, 11:06

According to analysts of the EastFruit project, this week the price of greenhouse cucumbers has risen again at greenhouse plants in Ukraine. As of today, the price of cucumbers is on average 33% higher than in mid-August last year.

This week, the price of greenhouse cucumbers in Ukraine increased by an average of 23%, and now stationary plants are offering this product for sale at 20-25 UAH/kg.

Producers justify this increase in price by the limited amount of greenhouse cucumbers on the market, as only a few Ukrainian plants currently sell this product.

However, at the same time, sellers note a significant demand for cucumber during the peak season, when the supply of this product from local farms is limited.

"Producers claim that sharp temperature fluctuations have led to an increase in the spread of cucumber diseases, which reduces the yield on stationary greenhouse farms. Weather conditions, such as heat and drought, only exacerbate the situation," analysts emphasize.

They also add that Ukrainian farmers reported a reduction in open field cucumber production this year due to irrigation problems.

Analysts note that the cost of greenhouse cucumbers in Ukraine has already increased by 33% on average compared to the middle of last August.

"However, key market participants view this increase as a temporary phenomenon and agree that cucumber prices will start to decline when most stationary plants resume full operation," the analysts conclude.
